The Darlington to Saltburn line runs from Darlington South Junction to Saltburn, via Eaglescliffe and Middlesbrough, and provides the main arterial route linking industry along the River Tees with mines further south as well as the rest of the rail network further inland. Many short branches developed to serve the needs of the iron and steel industries on Teeside; raw materials were carried from the local mines to the works by rail, and the finished products were transported similarly. Between Eaglescliffe and Bowesfield Junction the line originally ran parallel, but separate to, the Leeds Northern main line; this was rationalised in later years to share the same set of tracks over this length. This leads to a discrepancy in the mileages for a short distance.
